Salon12b - Freestyle

Another salon 12b is taking place November 29. Door open at 7PM and the performances start at 8PM with the world premiere of Global Night Car. You can read it on the link. It will be read in three languages, in different voices, since nine different poets contributed to this experiment. In the break expect a good Goulash soup and something will be there for vegetarians as well. Desert will be by Rose: Condé rice with apricots...
After earthy food, the poets present will read their latest and thus unpublished work. Lucienne Stassaert will be kind enough to read the poems of three Breton poets one, Olivier Cousin, has received a major price. We always knew 'the project's poets' are fabulous.

L’enfant sur la jetée

Petit port de pêche paisible
au bout des garennes
Deux caseyeurs bleus
franchissent la passe
pour venir se soulager sur le quai
de leurs casiers d’illusions
et de désillusions

Il n’y aura qu’un seul témoin
De dos sur la jetée
un enfant scrute les flots
et les flots fixent l’enfant
S’il était assis sur le môle
on en saurait plus
Personne ne peut dire
s’il a jailli des vagues
ou s’il va y plonger
En suspens la vie l’attend
avec ses joies et ses déboires
comme la mer constellée
d’îlots et de récifs

Les deux caseyeurs bleus
passent les dernières balises
l’enfant n’a pas bougé
Il y a tant de cartes à s’inventer
*
Child on the jetty

A small peaceful fisherman port
at the edge of the moors
Two blue lobsterpot boats
cross the channel
to come and unload on the quay
their pots of illusions
and disillusions

There will be only one witness
His back to the jetty
a child scrutinizes the drift
the drift staring at the child
If he’d been sitting on the pier
we would have known more
Nobody can say
whether he shot up from the waves
or whether he is going to jump in
In suspense life awaits him
with its joys and troubles
like the sea spattered
with isles and reefs

The two blue lobsterpot boats
pass the last beacons
the child hasn’t moved
There are so many maps to invent

Paul Gellings presents Verbrande schepen

Paul Gelling reading from his novel Verbrande schepen published by Uitgeverij Passage on Thor, the culture boat in Zwolle. An intriguing errancy, a search for a love lost, and absolution maybe, to be sure of that , I will have to read the book first...
Here is Paul Gellings with Fred Schywek who translated Paul's poetry book Stem van de herfst - Stimmes des Herbstes.

Probable publication date: Poetry day in January 2012.

2de Festival v/d Europese Dichtkunst-2.

2.    Europese performance traditie:
    Havenklanken:
Roger Nupie (MC), Bart Stouten, Jean Demey (musician/composer-soundscape), Peter    Holvoet-Hanssen (Stadsdichter Antwerpen), Wilfried Bienek (Duitsland), Paul Gellings, Nederland, Job Degenaar (Friesland), Fred Schywek (Duitsland), Annmarie Sauer, Olivier Cousin (Bretagne) en Devorah Major (San Francisco, USA)
Moorsoldaten: Anti oorlog-Voor vrede – wij zijn geëngageerde dichters
Peter Holvoet-Hanssen (Stadsdichter Antwerpen), Wilfried Bienek (Duitsland), Job
Degenaar (Friesland), Fred Schywek (Duitsland), Annmarie Sauer, Devorah Major
(San Francisco), Didi De Paris, Frank De Vos, Tim Ceustermans-Deschepper, Frank
            Niehusmann

Moku

Ana Elsner, German born, living in San Francisco where she is part of the poetry scene coined the word Moku. It stands for her interpretation of haiku: MOdified haiKU. Here you see her reading July 30 - she reads very expressively- at the Om Shan Thé, on the weekly poetry night.

a new salon 12b event

A new event of salon 12b is planned for September 1st. One could interpret this as a 'dress rehearsal for the 2nd European Festival of Poetry on September 17, 8 pm in the Permeke Library in Antwerp.'
On September 1st, among others, will be present and reading/performing Lucienne Stassaert with Jean Demey, Annie Reniers, Peter Holvoet-Hanssen, Bart Stouten, Frank Devos, Roger Nupie who will be once again our MC at the Festival and others... During the festival we'll have 9 poets or musicians traveling from other countries: three from The Netherlands, 3 from the Lower Rhine area Germany, one from Bretagne, France, one from San Francisco, USA.
Since Marleen de Crée won't be able to make it on September 1st - but don't worry she will be there during the Festival I post one of the poems she intents to read September 17.
Si more sonando

nacht waait uit de bomen weg,
brengt wind in de vleugels. uilen
wieken in hun sluierdans. roepen.
vredig geluid. wij kunnen praten.

schaduw nestelt zich in ons bed.
handen splijten onze blik, glijden
in het gerommel. breken de wet.
hoe zullen we vallen? onze kussen kruisen

                        (One dies making music)

night is blown out of trees,
brings wind in wings. owls
sail in their dance of veils. call.
peaceful sound. we can talk.

shadow burrows in our bed.
hands splinter our sight, slide
in the turmoil. break the law.
how will we fall? our kisses cross

paths, sink their teeth in skin.
love spans like a glowing dome
between heaven and hell. between the dreams
and the stars she lays.

Koyaniquatsi in the Grand Canyon

Sometimes
all is dark & night
sometimes
a life of gray
dazzled by the light
not blinded by the shadow
so I mental map
my place
and where
I hope to go
mirror mapping
what I do
and do not know

2nd European Festival of Poetry

After some hesitation we have embraced the idea of a 2nd European Festival of Poetry: Note the date: September 17, 2011, 8PM, Permeke Library in Antwerp, Belgium. Poets from five countries and two continents will participate. The Netherlands: Paul Gellings, Job Degenaar and Catharina Boer, from Germany Wilfried Bienek and Fred Schywek (organisor) and from Brittany, France, Olivier Cousin. I put in a link to his poetic blog. From Belgium there will be established poets, young  poets, the city poet laureate from Antwerp, a  hard core performer, intimate and wise poets. Yet the big surprise is that it looks like one American poetess is coming over for the 2nd European Festival of Poetry: Devorah Major. She is a former city poet laureate of San Francisco, writes vibrant, moving poetry. She champions poetry as a tool of resistance, works with high school kids to open up their world and has given writing classes to the homeless. Meet devorah major in her poetry:

Lucienne Stassaert's poetic answer

© sms:foto duisburg/rhein 2011

Lucienne waiting and listening with full attention? and a bit tense, but happy.

The following poem is a declaration of love to her city and the river that flows through it. English translation will follow one of these days.

Een laken van water
bij de monding van de stad:
zo blijft de Schelde

Achter in mijn geheugen.
Nu en dan donkert het licht
in alle dingen

Op de rand van herinnering.
Zo effen, een wolk in een spiegel,
is het zicht op mijn verleden.

Regen wijst er de schade aan
en stilte, voorgoed ophanden,
groeit als klimop

Naar een uitzinnig zwijgen.
Ik kom er bij tussenpozen
aanstonds tot mezelf.

Samenwerking/Working together for Liu Xiaobo

Job Degenaar, President of WIPC Nederlands wrote: This picture of Kluun and Bettine Vriesekoop (Dutch celebrities) was taken in a bookshop in Utrecht. They receive a poster with the poem of Liu Xiaobo in our translation. The poster is a result of the cooperation of of Amnesty International Nederlands and PEN Nederlands. The text also can be found on the website of Amnesty Netherlands.

Liu Xiaobo: lees hem vrij

Liu Xiaobo

literatur festival berlin

wachtend, wachtend op me

in spiegelschrift –

Tekens om met hand en tand
te ontcijferen

want op het lijf geschreven
van wie je voorging
op de weg naar het einde –
 *
Es braucht Vögel
um zu singen
Menschen zu verschwinden

Sonne und Mondlicht
um Farbe zu bekennen:

wie beladen es ist
mit Bezeichnungen
in Spiegelschrift

Zeichen mit Klaue und Haar
zu entziffern,

weil auf den Leib geschrieben
so wie du vorgingst
auf dem Weg zum Ende
*
It needs birds
to sing
people to disappear

sun and moonlight
to show one's color:

how charged it is
with meanings
in mirror-writing -

Signs to decipher
with tooth and nail

because inscribed all over the body
of who before you took
the road to the end

Poets and friends

There are days that active friends keep one going. At four there was the presentation by Bert Bevers of his latest volume of poetry 'Andere taal'.

Interesting medieval music and well read poetry was offered to the throngs of people who showed up to share this moment of joy. Here you see Bert signing a book for a friend and thinking/writing down a fitting dedication. His poetry always has an air of history, observations of works of art and daily life. There is gentle steadiness in his way offering tranquility and reflection. Quite a gift to the readers.

Vera Alexander Beerten had her presentation in the evening in Gallery The black Panther . Here you see her listening to Professor emeritus Joris Gerits who gave a deep analysis of her third volume of poetry. She read well and the chill that was in the winter air installed itself between the shoulder blades with all the brilliant poems about loss of close friends and her mother. In 'Slechts kwade wind' you're going to discover images and heaviness for the soul which probably will console people going through the same feelings yet don't know how to express them.

Summertime by J.M. Coetzee

On a cold snowy, icy day at the 'Salon du Livre' in Colmar I stumbled upon Summertime by J.M. Coetzee. I have read Disgrace and several books of his essay's about literature and have been intrigued by Coetzee as a writer. So Summertime was meant to warm my chilly winter evenings. two nights was what it took to be warmed once again to this writer. The plot seems funny: a young English biographer wants to write a biography of late Mr. Coetzee and he searches out 5 respondents who knew him in the 1970's the formative basic years for his writing. So through 'conversations and interviews' and 'proofreading' of the transcription of the interview, Coetzee manages to weave in a lot nuance and possibilities. He draws a picture of himself as awkward, extremely insecure and socially incompetent, without a hair of sexual air about him. It made me smile, made me think about South Africa and the changes that took place and how estranged and alienated I felt when visiting the country because of work. And I recognize the question  that is asked in the book how to define where one stands politically or ethically. His teetering between radical (exemplified by doing his manual labor himself, although is inept at it, in order not to exploit a black person and feeling 'Afrikaander' because nobody claims what went on before and without Afrikaanders there would be no guilt, which he assumes. So J.M. Coetzee, thanks for another book and a lesson in letting go of taking oneself too seriously. Friends, read the book!

Life

Lucienne Stassaert, one of the Grand Ladies of poetry written in Dutch, reads her latest cycle Leven - Leben - Life. She is accompanied by Jean Demey on the clarinette who improvises with feeling and intelligence carrying her words.
Fred Schywek reads his German translation of the following poem: Leven (3)

Verkoold als het is
door een al te hoge hitte

ligt het als een gewezen
ster voor het rapen

in een steeg
vol geblakerde stilte –

Je kan er niet
in of uit

schaduwen tellen
is al wat je rest

tijdens het knakken
van een vroege herfst

zodra de wind
een buikspreker wordt
op zoek naar een uitweg –
*
Verkohlt wie es ist
durch viel zu hohe Temperatur

liegt es als ein ausgeglühter
Stern kurz vor dem Aufheben

in einer Gasse
voll mit schwarzer geräucherter Stille -

Du kannst da
weder rein noch raus

Schatten zähl'n
ist all das was dir bleibt

zur Zeit des Knackens
des frühen Herbstes

alsdann der Wind
sich verwandelt in einen Bauchredner
auf Suche nach Ausweg -

German: Fred Schywek
*
Charred as it is
by too high a heat

it lays there as a has been
star up for grabs

in an alley
full fire-blackened silence -

you can not enter it
nor leave

counting shadows
is ll that is left to you

in the cracking
of an early autumn

as soon as the wind
turns ventriloquist
looking for a way out -

Having pondered  about different ways to deal with multilingualism in a performance, the poem 'Wenn man nichts hat' by Fred Schywek was performed simultaneously in German and in Dutch by Fred Schywek and Annmarie Sauer.

From  Hafenklänge - Havenklanken - Sounds of Harbour:

sahen fliegend stinkend Fisch

sahen Körper im Fluß
sahen dunkle Wasser ohne Gnade

ohne Gnade
ohne Musik
so kalt wie der kalte Fluß
da oben

da waren Sommer
gemeine weite Wege

ist es da oben
doch die Welt

da war Kohlenschmiere
da war Saxophon
da war

da ist etwas
falsch

wenn man nichts hat
außer das Leben

*
Als men niets heeft
(voor Brel en Mega)

Vandaag was de dood thuis bij mij
toebedeeld in zelf en rook
hierheen geschreeuwd door een angst
geroepen door de fluit op de plank

vandaag zingen de engelen voor ’t eerst
de tijd binnen van de grote poort

Vandaag waren we aan de haven
zagen vliegend stinkend vis

zagen lichamen in de stroom
zagen donker water zonder genade

Vandaag is een vriend gestorven
vandaag is vandaag dood

waren wij aan zee
braken golven zoals we vroeger deden

zonder genade
zonder muziek
zo luid als de koude stroom
daar boven

daar waren zomers
gewone wijde wegen

is het daarboven
toch de wereld

daar was kolensmurrie
daar was saxofoon
daar was

daar is iets
fout

als men niets heeft
dan het leven

Volle maan - Voller Mond - Full moon

Lucienne Stassaert is a special lady, the grande dame of Flemish poetry. In the small edition of Love in Holland and Flanders she contributed an honest and surprising poem. It is the poets cat speaking and the poet herself.
Lucienne will read some other love poetry with musician Jean Demey on September 18, 8 PM at the Permeke Library in Antwerp at the Small Festival of European Poetry. For the full program surf.to/program
This is a project in the framework of Ruhrgebiet2010, European Capital of Culture.

Volle maan
(het afscheid van Rosebud)

Er is vannacht veel drift op til
wanneer de blote maan begint
te trillen als een hete snaar.

Ik hoor het al, Manneke Poes,
fluistert ze teder in mijn oor.
Ze is warempel even krols.

De maartse min zit in haar vel
daarom beschrijft ze met geen pen
zoiets heel triest als de muziek

in een Andante Amoroso.
Als Mozart zwijgt, keert ze zich in -
Dat houdt ze nu al jaren vol.

Wie weet verspreekt ze zich nog meer
als ze alleen is, zwart op wit.
*
Voller Mond

Full Moon
Goodbye of Rosebud

Tonight a lot of passion is on the loose
when a naked moon starts
shivering as red hot string.

I can hear it yet, Tom Cat,
she whispers tenderly in my ear.
She truly is also just so in heat.

The love of March is under her skin
and thus with no pen does she describe
something so sad as music

in an Andante Amoroso.
When Mozart is silent, she turns inward -
She has been keeping this up for years.

Who knows her tongue may trip even more
when she is alone, black on white.

Writing in full

A friend participated in a writing contest called 1001 love letters. Her poem has been choosen and can be found on page 108 of book number 9 of the project.

Congratulations José, wel done. The writing is gentle and full of fire, and the lay out is catching.Yet Blogspot seems to have trouble with it. At least you have an idea with the scan of  a page from the book. Dear readers practice your Dutch:

VOL SCHRIJVEN
Ik wil je de huid
vol schrijven
kruidige tatoeages
met pluimzachte naald
diep gegrift
Verlangen
over van hoop
overhoop
Heel diep
een vleugeltje angst
verborgen
Ik wil je
vol schrijven
je huidig
vol schrijven
ik wil
je diep gegrifte zijn.

Chicken Suit

In the last post I mentioned the New York poet Robert Hershon publisher of
Hanging Loose Press implying I like his poetry. I like it enough to have translated some. A lighthearted yet thoughtful Chicken Suit from Calls from the Outside World.

A man in a chicken suit
stands at the subway exit
handing out flyers and loudly
procmaiming the virtues of
honey-fried wings or money-
back onion rings
It's hard to understand him
through the plastic beak and
what does a man in a chicken suit
really have to say to you anyway
This assumes it's always the same
man inside the chicken suit but
it might be a new guy every day
unless he is dedicated to this form
of career in a chicken suit
And I have been watching him
from the third floor window
for half an hour now
which may indicate the level
of my own ambition this morning
The eagle suit lies on a chair
waiting for a smart breeze
*

Kippenpak

De man in een kippenpak
staat aan de uitgang van de metro
deelt reclame uit en luid
verkondigt hij de deugden van
honinggebakken vleugeltjes of geld
terug uienringen

War Dances is Sherman Alexie's latest volume of short stories, sprinkled with some poems.  His wily approach  always surprises. His short stories make one think, muse and ponder, enjoy the changes of tone and all that jazz. He is master of metaphor and of reality and his writing is moving, heart breaking and contrary. Identity, society, writing are recurrent themes in all his writing  I know. I love his poetry even more with its weird forms and the formal games he plays. His fifth volume, as always published by Robert Hershon of Hanging Loose Press ( a rather decent poet himself) is titled  Face and is a translators nightmare. One day, when I see an ocean of time in front of me I will try new approaches to translating.
