Town hall reception for Lucienne Stassaert

In the stately town hall of Antwerp Lucienne Stassaert was officially received to be honored as one of the recognized Belgian poets writing in Dutch. In absence of the person responsible for culture in Antwerp, Miss Leen van Dijck was a more than wordy replacement, with personal words of recognition and warmth she honored this grande dame of poetry.

Lucienne answered with a a brief speech and a poem which under pinned her belonging to this city: De Scheldt, the river that flows through this town and shapes its citizens.

Friends came to talk and honor Lucienne, looking at some books after signing the GoldenBook of the city of Antwerp
In  this picture a good time is had by all...
Many thanks to Henri Floris Jespers, long time friend of Lucienne and as she called him: the benchmark for quality in poetry in Flandres.

About death and living again

The poet Bart Stouten in the shade and applauding hands in the foreground...
The applause was well earned for the new book' Tussen Dood en Herleven'.
Two of the keynote speakers  could not be present. Luckily Bart, cool as ever,  just told  about the 4 parts of the book. The inspiration was the close friendship with the MUHKA-curator Jan Foncé who has passed away. The presentation was organized in the museum café where Floris De Rycker played baroque music on the lute. Friends, admirers and lovers of art and literature gathered for the ocasion.

Even the books arrived on time.

And then he read some poetry...  Well you just will have to get the book.
Thanks for a wonderful and warm afternoon and  beautiful poetry.

Ok, Tomorrow I'll post the last poem he read but in its English translation...

Life

Lucienne Stassaert, one of the Grand Ladies of poetry written in Dutch, reads her latest cycle Leven - Leben - Life. She is accompanied by Jean Demey on the clarinette who improvises with feeling and intelligence carrying her words.
Fred Schywek reads his German translation of the following poem: Leven (3)

Verkoold als het is
door een al te hoge hitte

ligt het als een gewezen
ster voor het rapen

in een steeg
vol geblakerde stilte –

Je kan er niet
in of uit

schaduwen tellen
is al wat je rest

tijdens het knakken
van een vroege herfst

zodra de wind
een buikspreker wordt
op zoek naar een uitweg –
*
Verkohlt wie es ist
durch viel zu hohe Temperatur

liegt es als ein ausgeglühter
Stern kurz vor dem Aufheben

in einer Gasse
voll mit schwarzer geräucherter Stille -

Du kannst da
weder rein noch raus

Schatten zähl'n
ist all das was dir bleibt

zur Zeit des Knackens
des frühen Herbstes

alsdann der Wind
sich verwandelt in einen Bauchredner
auf Suche nach Ausweg -

German: Fred Schywek
*
Charred as it is
by too high a heat

it lays there as a has been
star up for grabs

in an alley
full fire-blackened silence -

you can not enter it
nor leave

counting shadows
is ll that is left to you

in the cracking
of an early autumn

as soon as the wind
turns ventriloquist
looking for a way out -

poetic license

Before this blog, I have maintained Muddy roads & dusty trails and Tony Mafia, the painter. It's time for something new and different: Miscellaneous poetics & poetic license in as many languages as I can manage, short essays about translation of poetry, reports about events & presentations. Also places, beauty, thoughts, reading notes, poems, pictures, people's portraits, writers in prison, criticism, presentations of interesting projects e. a. Let's go, let's write, let's read. By the way a good dribble, a nice pass, power and flying with a ball on a foot has its own poetic beauty.

Liu Xiaobo (2009) writes … A Little Mouse in Prison, a poem by Liu Xiaobo, a writer in prison, whose chair is empty at the meetings of Pen Flanders.

A little mouse crawled through the iron bars
And paced nervously on my windowsill.
The worn walls watched him
The mosquitoes full of blood watched him.
He drew even heaven’s silver light
And seemed to fly.
This kind of beauty is rare.

Tonight, the mouse is a dapper gentleman.
Not eating.
Nor drinking.
Nor aimlessly chattering.
His wide-eyed stare is that of a traitor as
He walks in the moonlight.

Een kleine muis in de gevangenis
Liu Xiaobo
